About Dangerous Dave

Dangerous Dave is a browser recreation of the 1990 DOS platform game in which a young hero in a red cap explores a series of perilous rooms. Each level has the same simple goal: find the gold trophy, then walk through the exit door. Everything between those two points is the puzzle. This version is newly written TypeScript with pixel art drawn in code and square-wave sound effects composed for it. It does not load the original executable, extracted level files or recorded audio, and it is not an official release from the original developers or publisher.

The campaign follows ten main levels and four bonus areas. The first level fits on a single screen and teaches the loop of jumping between ledges, collecting treasure and finding the door. Later levels stretch several screens wide and scroll in half-screen jumps when Dave nears the edge. The layouts are authored text grids based on period screenshots and route descriptions; where a reference was incomplete, the gap is noted in the project research file instead of being presented as an exact copy.

Treasure has fixed values. A purple orb is worth 50 points, a blue diamond 100, a red diamond 150, a ring 200, a crown 300 and a scepter 500. The trophy itself pays 1,000 and leaving through the door adds a 2,000 point exit bonus. Every 20,000 points earns another Dave, up to the three spare heads shown in the top bar. A game starts with four lives in total.

Fire, water and the purple weeds that sway at the bottom of some rooms are instantly fatal. So is falling out of the bottom of a level. From the third level onward, creatures loop through the air on fixed paths and fire bolts across the room when Dave is level with them. Touching one destroys both of you. A gun, when you find one, fires a single bullet at a time; wait for it to hit something before firing again. Shooting a creature is worth points, while colliding with it is not.

The jetpack changes how a level is read. After picking it up, toggle it on to fly in any direction and toggle it off to drop. Fuel drains whenever it is running, even when Dave is hovering in place, so plan a flight before switching it on. Equipment is kept if Dave loses a life in the same level, but every new level starts with empty hands. Trees, vines and star fields can be climbed: hold up or down inside them to move and let go to hang in place.

Movement keeps the distinct feel of the original. A jump has a fixed arc that you can steer, but walking off a ledge produces a fall that keeps drifting in the direction you were walking until you press against it or tap Up. Learning that difference makes the tighter drops much easier. The movement numbers are calibrated for this browser version and are not claimed to be frame-exact with the DOS program.

The keyboard defaults avoid browser shortcuts: arrows or W A S D move, Space or Up jumps, X fires and Z toggles the jetpack, and every action can be rebound from the Controls menu. On phones a directional pad sits beside JUMP, FIRE and JET buttons that accept several fingers at once, beneath the picture in portrait and on either side in landscape. Pausing, switching apps or rotating the phone clears held buttons. Your best score and key choices stay in this browser; if storage is unavailable the game still plays.

A few useful tricks

  • Collect the trophy before the gems near the door so a slip does not cost both.
  • Walking off a ledge keeps you drifting; tap Up to stop the drift and drop straight down.
  • Turn the jetpack off on a safe ledge to save fuel while you plan the next move.
  • A creature only fires when Dave is level with it, so change height to dodge.
  • Wait for your bullet to land before pressing fire again.

Good questions

How many levels are included?

All ten main levels plus the four bonus areas reached from levels 5, 8, 9 and 10. The layouts are authored from period references; the research notes list where a reading was incomplete.

Is this the original DOS program?

No. It is a newly written browser recreation with pixel art and sound authored for it. It does not run the original executable or use extracted level or sound files, and it is not an official release.

How many lives does Dave have?

Four in total: the Dave you are playing plus three spare heads shown in the top bar. Every 20,000 points adds a spare, up to three.

Why will the door not open?

The door only works after Dave picks up the gold trophy for that level. The bottom bar says GO THRU THE DOOR once you have it.

How does the jetpack work?

Pick it up, then press the jetpack key or JET to switch it on. Fly with the arrows or the pad. Fuel drains while it runs, even when hovering, and the bar at the bottom shows what is left. If the tank runs dry, the jetpack reappears where you found it, and losing a life refills it.

Can I change the keys?

Yes. Open Controls from the title or pause menu, choose an action and press a new key. Pause, mute and browser shortcut keys stay reserved.

What is saved?

Your best score, sound setting and key bindings stay in this browser. A game in progress is not saved between visits.
