How to play Dude 2048

  1. Press Play. First-time players get three short tips on the board itself; after that the game returns you to whatever you played last, with your board saved.
  2. Swipe on the board, press an arrow key or W A S D, or tap the direction buttons. Every tile slides as far as it can that way.
  3. Two tiles with the same number merge into one tile worth their sum, and the sum is added to your score. A merged tile cannot merge again in the same move.
  4. Every move that changes the board adds a new tile, usually a 2. Keep your biggest tile in a corner and build a descending row beside it so each new merge feeds the chain.
  5. Made a mistake? Undo takes back your last move exactly. The Undo button shows how many you have left, and the Menu explains the rule for each mode.
  6. Make 2048 to win, then keep going. When no move can change the board the game ends and shows your score, top tile, moves and merges. Open Menu for other modes, challenges, stats and themes.

About Dude 2048

Dude 2048 is the sliding-tile merge puzzle, rebuilt for phones and desktops with original artwork, sound and a lot more to play. Swipe or press an arrow key and every tile slides as far as it can in that direction. Two tiles with the same number that meet become one tile worth their sum, and that sum is added to your score. Every move that changes the board drops in a new tile: a 2 nine times in ten, otherwise a 4, on a random empty square. A tile can merge only once per move, and the game ends when no direction can change the board. Classic 4×4 is a faithful port of Gabriele Cirulli's MIT-licensed 2048, credited in full in our Terms & Conditions. Make the 2048 tile to win, then keep going for 4,096 and beyond.

The same rules stretch across other boards. The 3×3 pocket is a tense climb to 256, while 5×5, 6×6 and 8×8 give you room for 4,096, 8,192 and 16,384. The Hex Ring is a ring of eighteen hexagonal cells around a solid hub: tiles slide in six directions, so swipe along any edge of a hex or use Q, W, E, A, S and D. Fibonacci swaps the doubling for the golden ladder, where neighbouring numbers merge (1 and 1, 1 and 2, 2 and 3, 3 and 5) on the way to 987. Blitz gives you 90 seconds on Classic rules, and every new top tile from 128 up adds ten seconds. Zen is Classic with unlimited undo and its own best, for playing slowly.

The Daily is one 4×4 game per UTC day with the same tile dice for everyone, so your result can be compared fairly with a friend's. You get one undo, you can finish and bank your score at any time, and medals mark the top tile you reached: Bronze at 256, Silver at 512, Gold at 1,024 and a Crown at 2,048. Finishing on consecutive days builds a streak, the Stats page shows your last two weeks, and Share copies a small colour-square picture of your final board with your score. Challenges are thirty fixed puzzles in five sets: finish a chain of tiles, work around stone walls that never move, survive the 3×3 pocket, tidy a crowded board down to a few tiles, or rescue a board with big tiles in all the wrong places. Each has a move limit and earns up to three stars, and every one of them has been cleared by our test player on the exact same tiles you get.

The board is built for feel. Tiles glide and pop on the graphics card, big merges throw sparks, new top tiles get a banner and a rising marimba note, and Android phones and recent iPhones give a light tick on merges. Swipes register the moment your finger has travelled far enough, one move per swipe, and a second finger never moves the board. Pick from six themes: Neon, Paper and High contrast are free, Ceramic uses glazed tiles we modelled in Blender and opens with your first 512, Lagoon opens with fifteen challenge stars, and Ember with your first 2048. The board fits phones held upright or sideways, and reduced-motion settings calm every animation.

The original, then eight more ways to play

Classic 4×4 keeps the rules of the original 2048 exactly. Around it sit boards from 3×3 to 8×8, a Daily board that is the same for everyone, a 90-second Blitz, the six-direction Hex Ring, Fibonacci merging, a no-pressure Zen board and 30 hand-made challenges with stars.

Undo with rules you can read

Every mode says how many undos it gives. Classic starts you with three and hands one back for each new big tile. Undo rewinds the tile dice too, so it takes back a move but can never reroll a lucky tile, and the Daily gives everyone the same single undo.

Progress that stays with you

Per-mode stats, a tile ladder of how often you reach 256, 512 and beyond, a Daily streak with medals, challenge stars that open new sets, and six original themes, three of them earned. Everything saves after each move on this device, with no account.

A little help for your next high score

  • Pick one corner for your biggest tile and keep it there. Most runs that end early start with a move that pulls that tile out of its corner.
  • Favour two directions, such as down and left, and use a third only to unstick the board. Save the fourth for emergencies.
  • Build a snake: biggest tile in the corner, then smaller tiles in order along the edge, so every merge slides straight into the next one.
  • Empty squares are your breathing room. Once the board is half full, prefer moves that merge over moves that only slide.
  • In Blitz, go for new top tiles early. Your first 128, 256 and 512 each add ten seconds, which is worth more than a few quick points.
  • On the Hex Ring, use the hub. Tiles stop against it, so it works like an extra wall you can build against from any side.
  • In challenges, read the target first. Tidy puzzles reward merging several pairs in one move, not building one big tile.

Good questions

Is Dude 2048 free to play?

Yes. It is free with nothing to install and no account. The whole game runs in your browser tab on phones, tablets and computers, and nothing is for sale inside it.

Are the rules the same as the original 2048?

Classic 4×4 uses the original rules exactly: the same slide and merge order, one merge per tile per move, a 2 nine times in ten or a 4 on a random empty square, and the same scoring. The code is a port of Gabriele Cirulli's MIT-licensed 2048, credited in our Terms & Conditions. Everything you see and hear is original.

How does Undo work?

Classic, Hex Ring and Fibonacci give you three undos per game, and each new top tile from a quarter of the goal up (512 on the 4×4 board) gives one back, up to three held. The Daily has one undo, Blitz has none, Zen is unlimited and each challenge shows its own number. Undo also rewinds the tile dice, so it never rerolls a new tile.

Is the Daily the same for everyone?

Yes. Everyone gets the same tile dice on the same 4×4 board each UTC day, so identical moves give identical boards. You get one official game a day with one undo, you can finish it whenever you like, and medals, your streak and a shareable result show how you did.

What happens after I reach 2048?

You win, and you can keep going. The board keeps accepting moves so you can chase 4,096, 8,192 and beyond, the goal box switches to your next target, and your best score and best tile keep tracking.

Are the challenges fair?

Yes. Each challenge uses fixed starting tiles and fixed tile dice, so it plays out the same every time. Our test player cleared every one within its move limit, and the automated tests replay those winning lines, so every target and even three stars are known to be reachable.

Is my progress saved?

The game saves after every move in this browser. Each mode keeps its own board, and your best scores, stats, Daily results, challenge stars, theme and settings stay on this device. Boards and best scores from the earlier version of Dude 2048 carry over. If storage is blocked you can still play for the visit.
